Elongated domes are another pioneering innovation that provide an alternative where space
constraints, equipment configuration or
usage objectives do not require a spherical enclosure. The 7 x 12 foot dome for example is ideal
for customers that do not need the 12 foot but need more room for a longer telescope.
12 x 18 foot elongated domes similarly extend the 12 foot dome.
All our clam shell designs minimize cost of ownership by reducing complexity and allow full opening
to enjoy the night sky or achieve immediate thermal equilibrium.
Required options are either motor drives or the hand winch. Remote control motor drives give you push button opening or remote control. These motor controls
feature RS-232 interface so you can view remotely from home or office. The clam shell design with the
latest weather seal technology offers the best protection from the elements. Your equipment
may be further secured by padlocking the shells and with the natural locking of the
motor drives.
Ingress and egress is from below and require a support structure or one of our door access bases.
Elongated domes are the first to feature a base high enough to enter from below. People are installing
our domes on top of almost any kind of building from Play houses to silos. For these installations
the dome is easily accessed from below.
Installation is a snap. Just bolt the lower flange of the dome to a support
structure that is isolated from your telescope pier and allows access from below.
Our 7 x 12 foot elongated clamshell
observatories are shipped on one skid and require approximately 6 man-hours to assemble.
These astronomical domes weigh only 550 lb. and the shipping weight is approximately 1000 lb.
All parts are labeled and assembly instructions are included.
Most domes are ordered with a white gel coat exterior to achieve the best UV protection but domes
are frequently ordered in a variety of colors. Black is the standard interior color.
